Outlaw is set in Liddesdale, a remote Scottish valley that was Armstrong country, watched over by the brooding fortress of Hermitage Castle. The story centres on Blackhope, Sim Armstrong’s tower, where Ringan grows up.
Bound by Blood moves to Carlisle and the English West March. Ringan is now a Warden’s rider based at Carlisle Castle, the great border fortress that guarded the western frontier.
Lance and Sword is set in the English Middle March, in the valleys of North Tynedale and Redesdale. Here Ringan lives among his Charlton kin, serves Robert Carey and shares a hidden bastle with Elspeth.
